We've asked the coach of each of our three teams to write up a brief summary of their game. We'll be posting these summaries each round throughout the season so that you can keep up to date with the club's performance.
Round 11 was the return to state league after 3 weeks break. The reserve men faced a difficult opponent in Mt Lofty who defended well and attacked intelligently. We lacked our usual strength in blocking, and failed to make up the difference in floor defence, particularly when Lofty attacked from 4.
Our execution in offence was lacking, but we still played some good volleyball. Ultimately, the court communication lead to the straight at loss. Andy Wong receives MVP for this match for his continual effort and presence at the net.
Division 1 Women
The Division 1 Women went down to Austral in three sets, in a difficult match. The girls started each set quite strong, leading Austral a number of times before experiencing a streak of errors or unlucky points. Unfortunately the team couldn't quite recover from these deficts, and lost in straight sets. MVP goes to Laura Malcolm for strong blocking in the front court, and some effective quick hits through the middle.
Overall it was a disappointing loss, but after the game it was very encouraging to see the determination of the girls to finish off their season with some strong volleyball. Special mentions go to Elly Surman and Connie Rowe for giving some great motivational speeches in the post-game meeting!
Division 1 Men
The Division 1 Men played against Mt Lofty Volleyball Club in round 11. It was a good start to the game, but too many unforced errors lead us to lose the first 2 sets.
Following a few changes to the rotation, things started to improve. Dan Emery provided solid blocking and offence through the middle, whilst Matthew Chan provided a consistent hitting option on the outside and Waley Chan created stability in the backcourt defence. It was a combination of these that lead us to take the 3rd set. However throughout the game, inconsistent serve reception and inability to capitalise on chances and finish points lead us to lose the game 3-1.
