SA State League - Round 2

Each week of the 2015 season, the AUVC's State League coaches will be providing a brief match report for the day's play, as well as the most valuable player from their team.

Round 2 was a difficult one for the AUVC, with none of our teams managing to score a win. Even so, the club's teams are showing impressive improvement, and we look forward to a more successful weekend for Round 3!

League Reserve Women

Mark Eldridge and Ming Tan

This week, the Reserve women faced 2014 premiers South Adelaide. The first set was close, with both teams neck-and-neck throughout until South was unfortunately able to take the set 25-22. The AUVC women made an impressive performance, once again showing that they can go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the league.

The second and third sets started close, but unfortunately the AUVC couldn't hold off the strong serving from South Adelaide. MVP for the game goes to team captain Anna Baumgarten*, for her on-court leadership and strong hitting down the line.

*Side note: if you're interested in German tutoring, Anna is available!

Reserve Men

Brad Hocking and Connie Rowe

A tough game this week against Norwood. The Reserve Men started the match aggressively with a strong front court presence and tough defence resulting in the first set coming our way. Norwood then stepped up their game and unfortunately we couldn’t match them, with Norwood taking the game 3-1.

Honourable mentions go to Dan Vincent for blocking well against a very fast offence and Brodie McDougall for supporting in both setting and middle. MVP for round 2 goes to Edward Pietsch for his consistent aggression in front and back court.

Division 1 Women

Dan Vincent and Anna Baumgarten

The Division 1 women played against a strong Mt Lofty side this week and unfortunately went down 0-3. Our serving had improved dramatically from the previous round and even became a strength of ours with the ability to consistently string multiple points together. However, we often struggled to break the strong serving runs of the Mt Lofty girls which highlighted plenty of room for improvement in our serve reception.

Honourable mentions to Elly Surman for adding considerable strength to our defence and to Rebecca Proctor for her aggressive presence at the net. MVP for this round goes to Charlotte Vince for strong, consistent setting, effective, reliable serving, and backed up by her constant aggressive presence at the net.

Division 1 Men A

Brad Hocking and Connie Rowe

The Division 1 A Men had a difficult game against favourites South Adelaide. Our front court presence matched our opponent, but our serve reception and free ball delivery ultimately failed us and handed South an easy 3-0 win.

Honourable mention goes to Toby Frost for his excellent front court attack. MVP for round 2 goes to Max Davis for is enthusiasm and aggression all round the court.

Division 1 Men B

Brad Hocking and Connie Rowe

The Division 1 B Men stepped up their game from last week, playing a tougher opponent but unfortunately achieving a similar result and losing to Mt Lofty in straight sets. Even so, the consistency of attack and knowledge of the game is clearly building.

Honourable mentions go to Halim Darwish for is consistently strong presence in serve reception and front court and to Mehdi Mohamoodi for his excellent blocking and attack in the middle and outside. MVP for round 2 again goes to the Captain Tom Mansfield for showing his strength in both setting and middle.
