SA State League Round 14 - Match Reports

Reserve Men

AUVC def Austral 3-1

The reserve played another solid match this weekend against Austral. Keen for revenge after being defeated by them earlier this year, the guys played aggressive throughout the match. The first set loss was caused by serving and spiking errors. The next 3 sets saw the errors come under control while maintaining the offensive aggression and defensive enthusiasm. Ultimately, AUVC emerged victorious.

Honourable mentions go to Jade Walsh for his reliability as opposite and to Daniel ‘Dipper’ Slorach for his setting options. MVP for round 14 goes to Edward Pietsch for leading the team by example – bringing home the win.

Reserve Women

USC Lion def AUVC 3-1

The Reserve Women played one of their best matches for the season against a seasoned USC Lion squad, narrowly losing in 3-1 with close scores in each set. The second set was the standout performance for the AUVC, with outside hitters Rebecca Larizza and Shannon Lambert scoring a number of solid kills.

The team has progressed enormously since the beginning of the season, and I look forward to their final match against the Northern Knights this Saturday! The MVP for round 14 once again goes to Rebecca Larizza for being the team's most effective point scorer throughout all four sets.

Division 1 Women

AUVC def Henley (1) 3-1

The Division 1 women achieved their first win this week against Henley 1 with a score of 3-1. While service and hitting errors proved to be a big issue for us, we still managed to play some quality volleyball, and outplay our opposition. We took the first 2 sets quite comfortably, but unfortunately, a large error count in the third allowed Henley back into the game and we narrowly lost the set. However, we were able to swing the momentum back in our favour in the fourth, and an ace on match point from Simone sealed our victory.

Honourable mentions this week go to Madi Sparvell for great defence and free-ball pickup, as well as to Theresa Tung for strong offense and reliable, aggressive serving. MVP for this round goes to Rebecca Larizza for outstanding hitting, as well as strong, effective serving.

Division 2 Men (1)

AUVC def Henley 1 3-1

It was a very inconsistent game against the Hawks this week, the boys dropped the first set due mainly to a drop in the accuracy of passes and sets, making it difficult to finish the points. The rest of the game saw those errors drop off and allow some great hits from everyone, especially Dan Zakeri and Dan Emery. Matty Chan showed his skills in the back court, keeping the ball alive and allowing Nick to help set up some more strong attacks. Some hitting errors crept back in during the last set but eventually the boys were able to shake it off and get some good kills in.

MVP goes to Matty Chan for commitment to the ball and consistently hitting the ball in while attacking

Division 2 Men (2)

Austral def AUVC 3-0

A very up and down game this week by the division B squad. There were periods of excellent volleyball but inconsistency again proved to be the devil resulting in the straight set loss.

Honourable mentions go to Michael Scanlan for an excellent all round game and to Tom Mansfield for keeping up the motivation and communication in a harsh climate. MVP for round 14 goes to Mehdi Mohammadi for another aggressively consistent performance, leading the way in serve reception and offence.
