SA State League Round 5 - Match Reports

League Reserve Men

AUVC def Henley 3-1

A reasonably solid performance by the AUVC Reserve Men this week against a high performing Henley squad. Other than falling asleep in the second set, the squad was effective in executing the match strategy which focussed on aggressive serving, solid serve reception and intelligent, aggressive offence. Ultimately, AUVC won the match in 4 sets.

Honourable mentions go to Brennan Howie for another great serve reception games and to Brodie McDougall for performing well in the middle and outside with a seamless transition.

MVP for round 5 goes to Edward Pietsch for a great all round performance – reminding us how he was awarded the SA State League 2015 Reserve Men Best & Fairest.

League Reserve Women

AUVC def Henley 3-1

Round 5 had the AUVC Reserve Women winning a 4 setter against the Henley Hawks. The girls had a few stretches where they gave away too many points but overall they were able to use a strong serving game and attack to keep Henley on the back foot and keeping one of their players out of the attack.

Honourable mention goes to Charlotte Vince for consistent setting and putting in great effort on defence.

MVP goes to Rebecca Larizza who lead our offence with strong serving and swinging hard, keeping the pressure on Henley whenever she touched the ball.

Division 1 Men

AUVC def Henley 3-1

After a very slow start and dropping the first set in very tight fashion, we were able to dominate the remaining sets keeping them under 15 points each set for the remainder of the game. Our serving pressure picked up which helped lift the intensity of the rest of our play ultimately sending us to a 3-1 victory.

Honourable mentions go to Mani Ganiger and Max Davis for his aggressive offence and excellent transition defence.

MVP this week goes to Matt Rayner for a stellar offensive game, hitting some huge hits down the line.

Division 1 Women

Henley def AUVC 3-2

The AUVC Division Women lost a tight 5 setter to the Henley Hawks. AUVC came out a bit flat in the first set and lost a quick one, but fought back in the second for a clear win. The scrappy Henley squad took the third set and came out to a quick lead in the fourth but a great round of serving ultimately gave AUVC the win in the fourth.

The fifth set had AUVC being the first to 8, and then leading 14-11 before a strong server from Henley served out the set. A tough loss when the girls were so close to closing it out.

Honourable mention goes to Rachael Lawrence who kept the energy high and took advantage of her first week able to play front row with some great hits.

MVP goes to Eliza Bartel for another strong all around game as well as the excellent serving in the fourth set to lead AUVC to the comeback set win.
