SA State League Round 4: Match Reports

DIVISION 2 MEN (ROUND 3)

AUVC DEF. MT LOFTY 3-0

Div 2 men defeated Mount Lofty 3-0 this week. The lads went on court with enthusiasm and energy which translated to a very convincing win. Although it is still evident that when intensity drops the score reflects this, the boys were able to pull themselves together quickly and fight back.

Special mentions to the entire team for backing each other up 100%, undeniably meeting my goal for them, Bo, Scott and Peter for their strong, consistent serving winning many points (a considerable amount being aces) and Leon for making a special effort to keep the intensity up on court.

MVP is unanimously given to Roy. His serving, setting, willingness to try new things on court and all round drive to get to the ball was brilliant to watch. A well-deserved MVP.

DIVISION 1 MEN

USC LIONS DEF. AUVC 3-1

We came out very strong in the first set, taking a very convincing 1 set lead. The next three sets we struggled to deal with the double blocks that USC were putting up, which resulted in a large number of offensive errors on our part. Setters will need to work on setting the correct option as well as tuning up the set for our hitters as they found it hard this week to play off the occasional inconsistent set. Passing and service pressure saw a slight improvement.

Team communication and our mental game was much better this week however, in contrast to previous weeks. We remained positive and loud until the very last point. We will need work on our side out play as we tended to lose focus at times which caused us to lose points in streaks.

MVP goes to Daniel Emery for his strong, consistent play and usefulness to the team as a middle, as a passer hitter and as an opposite. Honourable mentions to Oscar Estrada for his defensive cover on court as a step in Libero.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN

AUVC DEF. USC LION 3-0

Adelaide University Div 1 Women took on USC Lions in round 4 of State League. The Div 1 women have been close in their 3 previous matches and were hungry for their first win of the season.

In set 1 Adelaide University came out to a lead early and managed to keep USC from going on any large runs to tie or take the lead for a close win of 25-23.
In sets 2 and 3 Adelaide University came out even stronger and ran an excellent well-rounded offence with all players getting involved to win the 2nd and third set comfortably at 25-12 and 25-17 respectively.

It was a great first win for the girls, and particularly nice to get it in convincing fashion. Honourable mention to Tori Long with her first game back from injury. Her presence in middle was great and we got a few 'Tori' hits in the game. MVP goes to Rachael Lawrence who had a great game setting and distributing the ball.

First set was an easy win for Adelaide University, with strong serving and being able to run a solid offence off of free balls leading to a 25-13 win
Second set Adelaide University was in control throughout the set but a large number of unforced errors in serving and hitting had USC being able to get 17 points.

Honourable mention goes to Amelia Nitschke for coming up from the division 1 women and slotting in admirably with the Reserve women. MVP goes to Lauren Crago for running an excellent offence.
