SA State League Round 1 - Match Reports

League Reserve Men

Henley def AUVC 3-0

Our Reserve men played well for their first game of the season. Plenty of good volleyball through our attack and scramble defence. Playing a strong defensive Henley side, we led for many parts of each of the three sets. But due to many many of our own errors (service and net touches especially) we dropped off and gave away each of the sets.

Henley's defence got on top of our hitters and they counter attacked effectively which we were not prepared for. A few nerves on passing and serving proved costly as well. A lot to take away from this match and we will look to come out stronger in the next game.

MVP for Round 1 goes to Mani Ganiger.

Division 1 Men

AUVC def Henley 3-1

This week the Div 1 Men came up against Henley Hawks. After a strong first set win it was clear that the AUVC men were playing at a higher standard than Henley. Consistent passing and strong blocking was able to shut out their offence early, which gave us the opportunity to get a significant lead.

Some more work needs to be done with the middles to establish more of a threat on court and to help weaken the block for the outside hitters.

MVP goes to Alexei Fey for his leadership and presence of mind on court. Honourable mentions for Ryan Muldrew for his consistent hitting.

League Reserve Women

AUVC def Henley 3-0

Round 1 had Adelaide Uni taking on the Henley Hawks. After a long preseason the girls were ready to get out and play their first match of the year.

First set serve receive started a little shaky but we were able to still run a strong offence off of it, taking Henley down 25-16

Second set Adelaide Uni kept the pressure on, and improved our passing to go on for a relatively easy 25-14 set win.

Third set Henley pushed back and kept the game tight up until the end. Our improved passing allowed us to keep and maintain the lead as well as set up 2 big middle balls to finish the game off, winning the set 25-22

Honourable mention goes to Shannon Schulz who came in and was solid at both outside hitter and middle for us, not an easy task. MVP goes to Chloe Emery who was a constant option and threat out of opposite, and played a very error free game.

Division 1 Women

Henley def AUVC 3-1

Unfortunately the team sustained injuries just before the season started resulting in lots of changes to the team set up. At the beginning of the game, the girls started off a bit slow, but managed to lift their energy and fight back to win the first set. The AUVC girls were put under high pressure following strong serves by Henley and lost the next 2 sets. In the fourth set the whole AUVC girls squad lifted and took a handy early lead.

The girls were able to hold this lead against a fighting Henley side to get the first set point at 24-23. Unfortunately Henley came back with strong serves to take the game 3-1 in a nail biting finish. Honourable mentions go to Shannon Schulz and Chloe Emery for playing three different positions throughout the game and providing consistent offence options.

MVP this week is Eline Baudet who in addition to playing three different positions stepped up at short notice to take a leadership role in the team and was one of the key players in lifting the energy of the squad.
