SA State League Match Reports: Round 7

DIVISION TWO MEN (ROUND 6)

NORTHERN KNIGHTS DEF. AUVC (3-0)

AU lost to Knights, 3-0 this week. The lads just could not maintain a lead at any point of the match and generally gave up in the last few points of each set. Decision making overall was the letdown of the game. Blocking was far better than previous weeks and movement on court has also improved.

MVP goes to Winston for effort to get to the outside blocker, resulting in block-kills that otherwise would not have happened.

LEAGUE RESERVE WOMEN

NORTHERN KNIGHTS DEF. AUVC (3-1)

Adelaide University Reserve Women went up against the Northern Knights in Round 7. Both teams came into the match with a 4-2 record so it was an important one for both squads.

Set 1 Adelaide University struggled with serve reception and was unable to put enough pressure to cut into the early lead the knights took and lost 25-20.

Set 2 Adelaide U came back with a better serve reception and with many Knights errors we were able to take the set easily at 25-16

Sets 3 and 4 Knights came back with more strong service pressure as well as putting up one of the stronger blocks that we have seen so far, preventing our attack from running as efficiently as we would have liked. The third set was close with the Knights taking it 26-24 and the knights kept that momentum into the fourth and won 25-18.

Honourable mention this week goes to Lauren Crago for getting good sets from our not greatest passing week.

MVP goes to Eliza Bartel who was our most consistent passer and defender, and for excellent block coverage when we were hitting.

 LEAGUE RESERVE MEN

AUVC DEF. NORTHERN KNIGHTS (3-0)

This week we played the Northern Knights, a team who we know can play a style of volleyball that can catch the best teams out.

The boys started steadily and won a close first set. In that set break we refined our game plan which paid off. The next two sets were quality volleyball, we played to the standard we know we're capable of and it was great viewing. Service pressure was strong and the serve receive game got better over time. The 3-0 victory put us further up the table, now we need to build on our momentum to take down the strongest teams.

Honourable mentions go to Adam Bowering for a solid setting game, and Oscar Harper for a great net presence and some great blocks.

This week's MVP is Dan Emery, who had a great service and attacking game. His serving was fantastic, pushing us out of a tight spot at the end of the first set.

DIVISION ONE WOMEN

AUVC DEF. NORTHERN KNIGHTS (3-2)

Div 1 women won against Knights 3-2 this week at Kensington. Firstly, I'm extremely proud of the div women this week. Coming up against the Knights team required many changes to the way we normally play, and every member of the squad adjusted accordingly. Together, we ignored the runs for and against us, and played a consistent brand of volleyball throughout the match. Even when 14-12 down in the fifth set, we held together, continued with our game plan and strung together four consecutive points under pressure to take the set and win the match. Going forwards, the team still needs to improve serve-reception, which will, in turn, give the middles more opportunity to run an effective middle option. Middles need to transition more and always be running as an option to draw a middle blocker away from our outside hitters. This will enable us to side-out sooner and hence reduce the number of runs against us. I strongly believe that communication between roles will improve the efficiency and confidence of this team. If we can give ourselves more time, or simply prepare to react to what will probably happen, our court movement and confidence will improve. They are simple and easy changes but must be addressed and worked on at training to gain any traction. They include:
• Libero informing her passers the trends of each server in serve reception before every serve,
• Middles leading the call for the team to pull off the net and setup defence from a free-ball

Honourable mentions go to Julienne for solid serve reception and Rachael for again maintaining a positive outlook and really standing out as a leader.

MVP this week goes to Shannon for her dominance in offensive plays, often winning crucial points in tough situations.

 DIVISION ONE MEN

AUVC DEF. NORTHERN KNIGHTS (3-0)

Div 1 Men convincingly beat the Knights 3 - 0 this week.

With quite a large squad to start with, it was clear from the beginning that we were the stronger team. Service reception and defence was great, which gave us a lot of options in offence and let us work off their weaker blocks. The middles are also starting to come together; this match saw a few really great middle runs.

Service errors tended to let us down in the match; work needs to be done to keep serves both aggressive and consistent. However overall a really well played match by the team!

Honourable mention to Brad Pedler for his almost 10 point serving run.

MVP goes to Alexei Fey who stepped in as a passer hitter and spent the whole game smacking the knights around.
